The effect of salinity on cadmium uptake by the brine shrimp Artemia fransiscana was studied in chemically defined saltwater solutions. Shrimp were acclimated to different salinities and exposed to the metal in solutions of differing salinity and composition. Within each acclimation group, the cadmium uptake decreased with increasing salinity of exposure. Most of this variation was explained by changes in the activity of the free metal ion. Among the acclimation groups, uptake increased by increasing salinity of acclimation. Most of this variation was explained by changes in the permeability of the shrimp. Uptake was not influenced by changes in the osmolarity or the concentration of any of the major cations in the solution. The... |

The effect of temperature on the uptake of copper by the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana has been studied in chemically defined saltwater solutions. Animals were acclimated to temperatures ranging from 10°C to 35°C and exposed to copper at different temperatures within this range. The results show that within each temperature acclimation group, copper uptake increases with increasing temperature of exposure. Within each temperature acclimation group most of the variation can be related to the combined effect of temperature on the chemical speciation and diffusion rate of copper in the diffusion layer lining the exchange surfaces. The magnitude of the apparent activation energy for copper uptake indicates that it is a facilitated... |

Three separate enrichment trials compared the n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) levels in Artemia franciscana nauplii (Great Salt Lake, USA) as a function of the n-3 HUFA level in the emulsion (30% and 50%), the enrichment dose (0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 g1-1) and the degree of dilution of a high HUFA emulsion with an n -3 HUFA-free emulsion (100/0, 50/50, 25/75, 12.5/87.5 and 0/100, HUFA-rich/HUFA-free, w/w). The standard emulsions were distributed by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, Working Group on the Mass Rearing of Juvenile Fish (ICES). After the 48-h enrichment, the content of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid EPA) and total... |

Using cyst material produced in an indoor cyst production system from 4 Artemia strains belonging to the species A. franciscana (San Francisco Bay, California, USA; Macau, Brazil; Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA) and A. parthenogenetica (Lavalduc, France), different factors were studied that affect dormancy in brine shrimp cysts. Preliminary experiments under varying (a)biotic culture conditions revealed an interaction between environmental conditions and hatching characteristics. Results obtained under better-defined conditions demonstrated a significant positive correlation between the amount of food available to the adult Artemia populations and the hatchability of their encysted... |

We present evidence that incubation of brine shrimp Artemia encysted embryos (cysts) at high temperatures (36-37°C) suppresses hatching of cysts from a parthenogenetic population, while at the same time allowing cysts of the New World bisexual species (A. fransiscana) to hatch. This approach is used to verify the presence of contaminating foreign material from the New World in natural cyst populations of Old World A. parthenogenetica, A. sinica, A. urmiana and A. tunisiana. We demonstrate that high temperature incubation can be routinely applied to cysts from natural Artemia populations occurring adjacent to fish and shrimp hatcheries, to determine the extent and... |

Bioavailability of oxygen for the saline-water invertebrate Artemia franciscana was studied, since both oxygen concentration and oxygen diffusion rate change with salinity. Total haemoglobin concentration and the relative contribution of each of three haemoglobins was measured in specimens acclimated to different salinities and oxygen concentrations. Both haemoglobin concentration and contribution were influenced by salinity and the group observed (males, females with and females without eggs). Multiple regression analysis showed that total haemoglobin concentration was better correlated with oxygen concentration than oxygen partial pressure. The relative proportions of haemoglobins 1, 2 and 3 were better correlated with oxygen partial... |

226 methanol and water extracts representing 74 mainly native plant species found in Amazonas State, Brazil, were tested at a standard concentration of 500 μg/mL for lethality towards larvae of the brine shrimp species Artemia franciscana. Several cytotoxic plant species were identified in this work: Aspidosperma marcgravianum, A. nitidum, Croton cajucara, Citrus limetta, Geissospermum argenteum, Minquartia guianensis, Piper aduncum, P. amapense, P. capitarianum, P. tuberculatum and Protium aracouchini. The results were analyzed within the context of the available traditional knowledge and uses for these plants. |

Two producers are described for the solid-phase extraction of ascorbic acid 2-sulfate from cysts of the brine shrimp Artemia . The first one is based on reversed-phase ion pair extraction on an octadecylsilica cartridge using tetrabutylammonium as the counterion, followed by elution with methanol. In the second procedure ascorbic acid 2-sulfate is retained on a DEAE silica cartridge and eluted with 0.1M sodium salicylate. Both approaches were used as part of a quantitative reversed-phase ion pair liquid chromatographic method with detection at 254nm. The anion exchange extraction procedure is superior to its ion pair counterpart in terms of recovery (88.7±3,5% versus 63.0±12.7%), reproducibility (CVs of 3.6-7.7% versus 6.3-18.7%), and... |

The brine shrimp Artemia franciscana is widely used in aquaculture and basic research in areas ranging from molecular biology to evolution and ecology. A key of its life history involves the production of encysted embryos whose development is halted (enters diapause) at the gastrula stage. These shelled embryos are released into the aqueous environment where diapause continues until terminated by suitable conditions that produce an "activated embryo", which then can resume development when conditions permit. Very little is known about the metabolism of diapause embryos, in contrast to activated embryos, which have been studied extensively. We have examined selected features of metabolism in diapause embryos produced in... |

Toxicological efifects of four extracts proceeding from the stem cortex of the amazonic plant Paullinia clavigera D.R. Simpson (Sapindaceae) by decoction, ethanolic, chlorophormic and hexanic on three arthropods: Rhynchophoruspalmarían (Linnaeus, 1758) (Curculionidae), Eupalamides cyparissias (Fabricius, 1777) (Castniidae) and Artemia franciscana (Kellog, 1906) (Artemiidae) in Ucayali, Peru were studied. The four extracts at the highest concentration tested were: decoction at a proportion 1:10 (w/v), ethanolic, chlorophormic and hexanic at 100 mg·L-1. Toxic effects were evaluated at 12,24,48 and 72 hours on larvae of III in star of R. palmarum and larvae of II instar of E. cyparissias; and at 24 and 48 hours on nauplii of A. franciscana. Toxicity in terms... |
